CONTENT

Your tour starts with an outside visit of the Basilica of Santa Croce, once the home of Michelangelo and which now houses his tomb. Some of the master’s earliest drawings reproduced figures from the frescos painted by the great Giotto at Santa Croce. Proceed to the Opera del Duomo, where the sculptor’s haunting, unfinished “Pieta” is displayed. Next, visit the Medici Palace and the New Sacristy of San Lorenzo. Here Michelangelo carved the famous Medici tombs, with their enigmatic, reclining figures of “Dawn, Dusk, Night and Day”. Your tour ends in the vestibule of the Laurentian Library for which Michelangelo created a magnificent stone staircase that flows down from the library itself.

NOTES

• Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. This is quite a tiring tour and will require a good level of fitness in order to see everything within the allotted time. Please dress appropriately when entering a place of worship (no shorts or bare shoulders).
