Underground Rome tour, 1-7 pax

CONTENT

Your tour of underground Rome begins with a visit of the Basilica of Saints John and Paul, both martyred on the site during the reign of Emperior Julian and later buried here. Built at the end of the 4th century, the church retains many elemants of its original structure, including the portico and the bell tower. Continue your subterranean discovery to the Mamertine Prisons, located on the east side of Capitoline Hill and adjacent to the Roman Forum. Built in the 7th century BC, they consisted of a vast network of dungeons under Rome’s main sewer. Both Peter and Paul were confined here prior to their execution. The tour concludes with a visit of the Basilica di San Clemente, dedicated to Pope St. Clement in 99 AD and noted for its 3 historical layers. The 12th century basilica was built on top of a well-preserved 4th century church, which was built next to a 3rd century Mithraic Temple.
