Depart Rome along the Autostrada del Sole and arrive at Orvieto, a hill city built on volcanic rock above vineyards in a green valley. Orvieto is the Umbrian hill town closest to Rome and is best known for its white wine. It lies on the Paglia, a tributary of the Tiber and sits on an isolated rock about 1,035 feet above sea level. Its interesting sites to visit include the Duomo, St. Patrick’s Well, the Museo Archaeologico Nazionale, the Etruscan ruins and the Museo Emilio Greco.
