Grottaglie and Alberobello custom tour, 1-7 pax

CONTENT

Grottaglie is located on the Salento Peninsula separates the Adriatic and Ionian seas. The surrounding city is dotted with deep gorges and canyons. These caves were inhabited by man during the Paleolithic times. The historic part in the Middle ages was founded by cave dwellers who found refuge here from the raids of pirates. In the 11th century Grottola became a possession of the bishops of Taranto, and in the 14th century there were built fortifications, defensive walls, the Castello, Episcopio, and the Chiesa Matrice. Today, Grottaglie famous for its pottery and grape groves. Of the attractions of Grottaglie can be called the Castello, Palazzo Urselli with a Romanesque facade and gates of the 15th century, Palazzo Majuli-the Comet, the convent of San Francesco di Paola with a luxurious patio and cloister, the Church Chiesa del Carmine with a stone den of the 16th century and the chapel, known as “Purgatory.” Alberobello, in the region of Puglia in southern Italy, is a strange and picturesque destination which is a must to be visit in Puglia. The small town is characteristic for its unusual districts of trulli, the characteristic white-washed conical-roofed houses of the area. The old quarter of Martina Franca is a picturesque scene of winding alleys, blinding white houses and blood-red geraniums. There are graceful baroque and rococo buildings here too, plus airy piazzas and curlicue ironwork balconies that almost touch above the narrow streets. This town is the highest in the Murgia, and was founded in the 10th century by refugees fleeing the Arab invasion of Taranto. It only started to flourish in the 14th century when Philip of Anjou granted tax exemptions (franchigie, hence Franca); the town became so wealthy that a castle and defensive walls complete with 24 solid bastions were built.
