Venice - Guided tour - Tour 2

Rialto Market and Gondola workshop of Squero Tramontin, 1-7 pax

CONTENT

Spend a couple of hours like a Venetian, walking slowly to Rialto, wandering through the market stalls, having a look at the best fish coming from the Adriatic, at the fruits and vegetables coming from the Lagoon Islands to understand the tradition, the life, the cuisine of the city. Have a look at the shops where since centuries you can find spices coming from the east; the Rialto area date from Venice’s founding 809AD, when Venice was just a Byzantine backwater with no palaces but fish and ambition to spare, and since then is the beating heart of Venice life and commerce, and still the most venetian part of Venice. During the walk we will do as Venetians do after shopping at the market, and spend a little time in a ‘Bacaro’ (old wine shop) for an ‘ombra’ (glass of wine) and a ‘cicheto’ (snack, finger food, tapa), mixing up with the locals and listening to the lively sound of venetian dialect. See how a Venetian gondola is made at the gondola workshop of Squero Tramontin in Venice. Back in the 16thcentury heyday of the gondola, there were upwards of 10,000 of these elegant boats plying the waters of Venice’s canals. Today there are about 350, and the job of “gondolier” is still a coveted profession, passed down from father to son over the centuries.
